Stingers lead from the start in TBA title win

The Scarborough Stingers Minor Bantams won the city AAA baseball championship Sunday at North York's Bond Park with a 7-2 win over the Etobicoke Titans.
"In the final game we came out swinging and got out to an early lead," said coach Larry Hardwick. The team never relinquished that lead, thanks to great starting pitching from Jack Dennis who went five and two-thirds of an inning, sitting down 13 batters.
The win was especially sweet for the Stingers after losing their opening-round match to the Titans, 9-7, and being one game away from elimination for the remainder of the tournament. A 10-2 win over the West Toronto Wildcats set up their next match against arch rival and six-time city champs, the North York Blues.
With the outstanding pitching of Derek Chiu and great team defence, Scarborough beat the Blues, 9-5, setting up a three-team tie entering the final two rounds. Scarborough won the draw for the bye into the final, while the Blues and Titans had to fight it out. The Titans eliminated the Blues, 12-9, in a hard-fought game.
The Stingers will now compete in the Ontario Baseball Association playoff tournament being held in Etobicoke on Labour Day weekend.

Stingers Mosquitos qualify for OBAs in Windsor

The Stingers' Mosquitoes earned their place at the Ontario Baseball Association's AAA provincial tournament with a thrilling 4-3 extra-innings win over the Etobicoke Titans Sunday at East Toronto Athletic Field. The win gave the Stingers, who hosted the city finals this year, the third and final berth for the championship, being held in Windsor on Labour Day weekend. The team will face the Riverside Royals in their first game at Windsor's Riverside Park. The Stingers lost to the Royals, 9-5, in a tournament game in Newmarket in August.
Pitcher Austin Tanfield held the Titans off the scoreboard for almost five innings before he hit his maxium pitch count and had to leave the mound. With Scarborough leading 1-0, Etobicoke scored twice on an error in the sixth. The Stingers came back to tie it in the seventh inning and scored twice more in the eighth to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the inning. Etobicoke mounted a comeback, scoring once and putting men on base but their hopes of a place at the OBAs ended with a two-out fly ball to right fielder Scott Moore that ended the game.
Scarborough lost 13-7 to the North Toronto As in the semi-final and then watched as the undefeated North York Blues lost a 2-1 shocker to the As, forcing a final sudden-death game three days later, which the Blues won 9-0. Earlier in the competition, Scarborough eliminated East York, 13-2, after losing their opening round game to North Toronto, 11-1.
