Stingers Bantams win city championship for second straight year

Aug. 23 - The Scarborough Stingers Major Bantam baseball team was victorious once again, obtaining the honor of city champs at this year’s Major Bantam 'AAA’ playoff held at Bond Park, Aug. 21-23.

After round robin play on Friday and Saturday, Scarborough advanced to the finals on Sunday with wins over East York, North York and West Toronto.

Sunday morning began with the semi-final matchup between the West Toronto Wildcats and North Toronto Spartans, which ended in a 9-6 win for the Spartans setting the stage for a championship match-up between the top two teams in the league.

This championship had all the makings of a great game: North Toronto finished only 4 points behind the firs-place Stingers in the regular season but held a 2-1 season record against them. "We had to come out with our bats swinging,”said Stingers’ head coach Larry Hardwick.

And that’s just what they did. In the bottom of the first, the Stingers bats came alive as they batted around and jumped into a quick 8-0 lead and cruised to an 11-1 win. Stingers’ hurler Jack Dennis, backed by a solid defensive unit, went the distance allowing only two hits and one run.

“I’m proud of how hard these boys have worked this season," said Harwick. Their accomplishments are well deserved."

Both Scarborough and North Toronto will play in the Ontario Baseball Association’s provincial championship in Leaside on Labour day weekend.

The team's win was also written up in The Scarborough Mirror, Sept 4.

  • Bantams capture Mississauga tourney crown
June 14 - The Stingers Bantams won the 2009 Mississauga Southwest Baseball Association Major Bantam Tournament on the weekend, beating the Oakville A’s 12-2 in the final on the strength of a complete game by hurler Jack Dennis.

The A’s struck first with a run in the opening frame but the Stingers responded in the top of the third with two runs of their own and went into the top of the fourth inning with a slim lead. Some key hits, including a bases-loaded double by Kevin Pingol, which brought in three runs, made it an eight-run breakout for the Stingers, who never looked back.

Dennis, kept the A’s off balance for the entire game with a good mix of fastballs, change-ups and the occasional curve ball. The great pitching, coupled with the stellar plays made by the Stingers’ solid defensive unit held the hard-hitting A’s at bay allowing one run the rest of the way.
