Stingers lead from the start in TBA title win

The Scarborough Stingers Minor Bantams won the city AAA baseball championship Sunday at North York’s Bond Park with a 7-2 win over the Etobicoke Titans.

“In the final game we came out swinging and got out to an early lead,” said coach Larry Hardwick. The team never relinquished that lead, thanks to great starting pitching from Jack Dennis who went five and two-thirds of an inning, sitting down 13 batters.

The win was especially sweet for the Stingers after losing their opening-round match to the Titans, 9-7, and being one game away from elimination for the remainder of the tournament. A 10-2 win over the West Toronto Wildcats set up their next match against arch rival and six-time city champs, the North York Blues.

With the outstanding pitching of Derek Chiu and great team defence, Scarborough beat the Blues, 9-5, setting up a three-team tie entering the final two rounds. Scarborough won the draw for the bye into the final, while the Blues and Titans had to fight it out. The Titans eliminated the Blues, 12-9, in a hard-fought game.

The Stingers will now compete in the Ontario Baseball Association playoff tournament being held in Etobicoke on Labour Day weekend.
